Geees, I just used the calculator and that's actually $9 a bd. ft! At the lumber yard I deal with red maple is $3.95 a bd. ft. and hard maple is $5.60 a bd. ft.
Tom,
I rarely buy less than 5 bd. ft. Heck, that's just one 1 X 8 X 8 board.
That's way too high Kevin. I buy 2 ft. oak boards at Lowe's for my projects. Unfortunately, there are no hardwood lumber yards in the area. So I guess I'm stuck. You should have seen what I paid at Lowe's for brass screws, washers and nuts. They are priced out of the ballpark just like the wood!

Yes the wood is expensive... HOWEVER... it is generally surfaced and ready to use. That is what you are really paying for.

DW - You are probably right. Take a close look at the wood that comes from Lowe's. The surface of the wood is chipped, gouged and uneven. So if we are paying for that service, we are indeed getting ripped off! Check out the 1/4" stock... not a flat board in the stack. You have to go to 1/2" or better for boards that are only semi-warped.

My local lumber yards will plane and joint 1 edge for no charge. Even Niagara only charges 15 cents a linear foot for that service. There is no reason for the price to double or triple. The cedar board that I picked up is rough on 1 side so if that's their idea of surfaced they need to learn a bit more about lumber, hehehehehe.
John....$11 a bd ft is rediculous!!!! Red oak is cheap (or at least it should be, hehehehe).

All I can get at either the BORG or Lowe's is red oak, poplar or pine and that is expensive and not of very good quality either. Used to be able to get maple and aspen there but no longer. Fortunately I do have a hardwood lumber yard about 20 minutes away but they are expensive also, averaging $8/bd ft for the maple and sapolo I just bought. Part of the hazard of living in Northern NJ I guess.

I worked it out last year for all the types of wood I buy, and in every case it was cheaper to mail order it than to buy it at the borg.

Sometimes I'm in a hurry though
