I'm thinking of dabbling in marquetry and wondered if someone could recommend a good veneer vendor. It looks pretty fun and I'm banned from sanding in the house for a while ;p I gotta have some wood to work with! /starts jonesing

Will you be cutting with a knife or with a saw? I know of one or two online resources which might be useful if you intend to start knife cutting.

I think I'd like a knife. The window method looks like something I would really enjoy; in fact, I've been doing intarsia in that sort of fashion. The double-bevel method with a scrollsaw is awesome and I'm sure it's way faster but I love working by hand. Thanks for your replies!

I actually had those links on my to-read list but, alas for my boss, you forced me to go through all the galleries at work last night! There's some pretty amazing stuff in there.

Yes, much of it is of a very high standard; you can only achieve some of the fine detail using a knife. However, I like my marquetry big and bold, which is where a saw comes into its own. My sister recently went to Sorrento in Italy, where there is a tradition of saw cutting, and she viewed some wonderful work. I am a fan of Silas Kopf's sawn marquetry too, and I am astonished SSW&C has never run a feature on him.
