Default Corian

Hi all -

Got a couple of questions for all those who know how to work with corian.

I scored a bunch of scraps from my brother-in-law - they came with plywood attached using some sort of mastic.

Question one -

What is the best solvent for cleaning off this mastic.

Question two -

I was thinking of resawing the corian down to 1/8 to make Christmas ornaments - Do I need a special blade? At what speed should I run my bandsaw for resawing corian?

Question 3 -

I read that I should buy some aluminum oxide sanding sheets to sand the corian smooth - I plan to do this before cutting the ornaments - How do I finish the ornaments after cutting.

TIA for any advice.

George

I've never tried to resaw Corian, although I've used it to make things (mostly custom cutting boards). I'd think it would be difficult to resaw, given that it's essentially plastic and the pieces can reattach themselves when they get warm. When I'm cutting boards out, I usually have to whack the parts I don't want out with a small hammer or something.

As far as finishing is concerned, all I ever do is sand them up to 600. I use the fabric-backed Aluminum Oxide sheets from Klingspor. I get excellent results.

Do be aware that Corian can be brittle when it gets too thin.
