Default Black Walnuts

Has anyone tried cutting black walnuts? That is, cutting in slices, like slicing a lemon?

If so, any tips, techniques ??

Thanks,

I just saw a woodworker on PBS using a set of wooden twist clamps to hold a dowel for cutting on a band saw, so I'm sure you could come up with something similar.

Are you slicing them perpendicular to the seam on the shell or in-line? And how thick?

Wood Dog, my first thought was that he underestimated teh amount of food for a party--or the whole neighborhood showed up instead of the couple next door.

Somewhere I have a stack of walnut slices that I got mixed in a box of misc. crap I bought at an auction years ago. They are very neat looking pieces. I always wanted to try slicing a few just to do it, but I never got around to it. I have cut a bunch in half though, they make great little turtle shells for crafts. To cut em in half I used a quick grip clamp to hold them as I sliced through them, and it worked fine. My thoughts on making multiple slices.. would be to make a jerry-rigged jig using a couple pieces of scrap wood, and a couple carriage bolts and wingnuts....Two pieces of 3/8 to 1/2 inch thick wood, about 1 1/2 inches wide and around 6 inches long.Drill a hole about 3/4 inch in from each end of the boards to accept the carriage bolts, and a 3/4 or 7/8 inch hole near the center, where your nuts will be held . Put your nut in between the two boards, seated in that hole, and crank the wingnuts tight . The edges of that hole should really grab your nuts and keep them from twisting or shifting as you slice through them. After each slice through, tighten the wingnuts a little bit to account for the saw kerf, and keep slicing and tightening until you cant anymore.
Thats not a tried and true method...only how I would try. I am interested in if it works, so if you try it, please let us know the outcome.

oops.. LOL, I just reread my post above... when I refer to "your nuts", I do mean "your WALNUTS". Sorry for the confusion, and the potential pain one could experience if it was interpretted incorrectly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
