I'm not aware of any dangers in cutting other than the normal wear a mask to keep your lungs nice and healthy and eye protection to keep the only set you will ever have safe. I have found the mdf tends to dull a blade more rapidly than other woods.

outdoors mdf will rapidly deteriorate if exposed to the elements. Proper painting will be necessary with an exterior grade paint..in my humble opinion.

We keep hearing about how bad MDF is if it gets near water. I took some 3/4" squares and dpropped them in cold and boiling water and left them overnight. It took a caliper to measure the swelling. I was supprised at how little it moved. and it took a long time for it to shrink back to size.
I would try it on outside ornaments as long as it was well sealed.
It machines well, and as Mike said it destroys sharp blades and bits.

If you don't mind spending extra bucks get MDO instead of MDF. They make some highway signs out of MDO

Alan it is similar to MDF with a little extra for outside use.

I wonder if that would be even harder on cutting edges.

They do make a Marine grade MDF as well. The glue used to hold it all together is water proof so it doesn't swell like the standard grade. Most of the time it's painted when used for exterior projects though. I'd think a good coat of varnish would help with Marine grade mdf but it'll never look like wood.

Depends on how big a project you are making out of MDF, the one problem I know of is when it gets wet it wicks up the water, then turns to Mold.

medium density overlay. highly recommended over mdf for outside use. mdf requires a lot of work and must be sealed to keep out moisture.moisture will wick into the edges and if you live in a cold climate, once it freezes, it will expand and cause a breach in whatever finish is put on it. better yet is white oak.
