There are a couple of projects I do with Aspen and have found it to be a very "friendly" wood. I sand it to 320 and it works very well with drill, scroll saw, hole saw, handsaw, router and holds small screws well and finishes well--but it is thirsty. (I make some word art picture frames for graduates) It Will absolutely drink the lacquer before you start to get a buildup.
Haven't seen it at my Lowe's, but get it at Menard's ususally 1" stock in various widths. Mine is shrink wrapped, so I can see almost all the wood and only once have a found a blemish hidden by the label with covers the bottom 1 to 1 1/2 inch.
No matter what blade I use, the sawdust does seem a bit on the fine side--almost like talcum powder, so proper venting and sawdust control is really needed with this stuff.
Somewhere on here I started a thread about "Clear on Aspen" and got some interesting infor on finishing.
