Default Veneered wood?

Is it possible to purchase wood/plywood with a veneer already applied? I've done some digging via google & it seems that the sites I hit offer the veneers separately. Thx.

I saw some veneer plywood at Home Depot a whileback, It was Oak I think but the "plywood" they used was made in a mixer. I don't think it would work very well in a scrollsaw.
Why not just use Baltic Birch (cheaper) and a good stain for the look you want.

Thanks ~ is there a special term for veneered plywood?

In my very limited experience, the stain saturates the wood in varying degrees. I thought a veneer would avoid this.

You're better off applying some sort of pre-stain conditioner to prevent the stain from absorbing at different rates. I use a glue size. Mix white glue with water to the consistency of skim milk, and brush it onto the wood. Allow it to dry, lightly sand off any raised grain, and then apply your stain.

Unfortunately, some of the woods you use as a veneer can also be blotchy. Cherry is known as a hard-to-stain wood.

I have some maple veneer that does not stain evenly also. Bob I may try your method and see if that helps. Steve

A very think coat of shellac works as well. They also sell pre-stain conditioners, but I've never used them.

Does that apply if you're putting on a clear coat as well?

BTW...who on earth would "stain" cherry !

I was trying to "ebonize" cherry to make it look like ebony with a vinegar and steel wool solution...it failed miserably.

If it's clear, you need to worry about blotching, usually...
