Evie,
I have gone to Lumber Liquidaters on several occasions and have aquired several excellent types of wood, including some great Birdseye Maple, Brazilian Cherry, Walnut and even Bamboo. Like all have said, you need to get the solid wood, not engineered and you will get different widths. If you glue it together as is, you will not get a clean edge, Like Alan, I cut off all the tongue and groove and plane the grooves on the back and you have some really nice wood. If you find out who the enstallers are for the store, you can get with them and if you are nice, they might give you the scraps and cutoffs from their jobs. I made a pen for one of them and now he gives me ALL his extra stuff.
Another thing to ask for is Purple Heart. When they get some of their shipments from overseas, they are shipped on crates made of 3x3 Purpleheart and often they will give it to you...
Hope this helps
