A few pieces in my gallery are cut from Cypress. Unfortunately the picture looks bad when enlarged.

The cypress I used is Louisiana swamp grown. It is typically used for outside construction and outside furniture here. Because it is grown in the swamps it is impervious to pest and weather resistant. It is a medium-light grain with streaks of reddish-brown and occasionally gray or greenish-gray. It has a tendency to develop splits as it seasons but once fully seasoned tends to be very stable.
There is a lumber yard nearby that has small mountains of it available in pretty much any dimension that you might want it and is reasonably inexpensive. I've still got a piece in my workshop that is about 6X6 that is three feet long and very well seasoned now.
