Default Helpwith wood names!

Ok, now y'all don't make me feel like a complete idiot. I'm new to working with all these exotics, and I'm not sure how you pronounce some of the names. I'm a southern boy, so once I get away from pine, poplar, birch and oak, it's pretty much exotic to me! I see some beautiful wood with names like "padauk" and "bubinga" but I can't figure out for the life of me how to say the name! Is there a dictionary of sorts that anyone knows of tat give wood information and pronunciation? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Josh

I noticed some of the web sites that sell wood have a guide to what they sell. Might be a place to start.

I have heard these two types of wood pronounced as "PAW-duke" and "BAH-binga"or "BOO-binga"----not sure if either is right but they are kinda neat to say this way. I even say "BAH-binga" when things go my way. LOL Guess it has something to do with listening to Mickey Redmond (TV announcer for the Detroit Red Wings) say Bingo-Bango as the Red Wings score!

Asa far as the physical properties of the wood, as mentioned many of the wood sellers have descriptions on their sites.

You can just put "pronounce padauk" into a search engine and it will give you places to go to get your information. Yahoo has an education site that will even give audio pronounciations of words.

Thanks for the suggestions folks. It didn't even cross my mind to search on pronunciation. Thank, Josh

Josh

I have never even thought about pronunciation. I read the label (my way) and make note of it on the back of finished pieces, but have never been asked to say it out loud. Just say it your way, with confidence and that will be believed!!! I have applied this method to foreign languages and training (part of my job) and have never been caught out yet!!!

Seriously, Josh even if you mangle the name when asking for it at a lumber mill, they will know what you want and will probably correct you. But then I have heard Paduak pronounced several different ways by people who sell it so I would not worry too much about it. What you really need to understand are the different characteristics and properties of the different species. Bubinga for example is as hard a rock! You can search the internet (Woodfinder :: Find Sources for Hardwood Lumber, Exotic Wood, Veneer, Sawmill Services and Other Woods such as Tonewoods, Recycled Lumber& Salvaged Wood, Carving Stock and Turning Blanks.) and find what you need or get a good reference manual at Barnes and Noble or some such place to keep handy in your shop.
