Nokas:

1st Welcome to the Forum. I hope you enjoy your visits here.

Now, about your question---

Black Lacquer is a very difficult finish. I wouldn't think of offering advise myself, as all I have is some book knowledge on black lacquer.

Another web site dedicated to finishes is:
Homestead Finishing Products Home Page

True black lacquer as in the black shinny finish on so Many Oriental pieces of wood work is a very specialized finish. Most Western finishes do what is called "Ebonized dye" with a nitro lacquer applied on the top of the Dye as a finish. This is NOT the same as the Oriental Black finish.

("Ebonized" wood, you can still see the grain of the wood.)

That's a great finish. Any deep thick rich laquer finish looks awesome, but I"m not the one to ask and I don't know that anyone here can truly help with that topic, other than pointing you the right direction.

Fox chapel sells this book. Foolproof Wood Finishing: The Complete Guide for Those Who Love to Build and Hate to Finish
Author: Teri Masaschi
Product Code: 3034
I was lucky enough to catch her seminar at the last open House.
I highly recommend this book.
Depending on the wood grain there is alot of prep needed to het that supper smooth finish.
