AAAAAHHHHHH Pier and beam foundations. That's what there called here. But the stumps can be made of cement or steel. No matter what is used, with all the heavy black clay in this part of Texas. The houses are moving all the time. During the wet season the piers sink. During the dry season they are pushed out of the earth. Foundation repair and leveling companies make a killing here. I know.

Just to confuse the issue, in UK, we call it "piling". We don't have nasty ants, termites or bugs but, in the area I live, much of the land is reclaimed from the sea and there is lots of marsh. Piles are sunk into the marsh to find bedrock to base the house on. Alternatively, the houses are built on "rafts", to support the building across the whole area, rather than just the walls.

Perhaps we should have a three-way dictionary!!! 'tis a reel ederkashun 'ere int it?

G'day Pete,
Sounds like a simular problem to the one we have in Kal. except ours is red clay.
During the 70's locals decided they wanted nice double brick and tile homes like they built in Perth so City builders would come to town and build them. Unfortunately they used concrete footing, like they did in Perth and as the houses settled, huge cracks appeared in the walls.
Now all brick homes have to be built on a concrete raft. Most of the new homes being built are "Brick Veneer". a brick outer wall, steel frames and giprock interiors with iron roofs.

Sue,
too bloody right, a 3 way dictionary would be the ants pants
