Default What the heck is this???

So my climbing partner says to me, I have a bunch of wood that an old room mate left behind, do you want it? Duhhhh . . . .
So most of it was not usable and what I did take will require a bit of milling to get anything useful out of it. When I first looked at it I thought it might be cherry. Score!! It looked like this when I got it.

When I milled it, surprise surprise surprise - it looks like this - any ideas???

Don't know if it's cherry or what from the photograph. Judging most woods from a photo is near impossible. The bark looks about like cherry, so maybe it is. Could be Alder. Has a similar look as Masur Birch on the wood, but not the bark. Might have to send me a sample board foot or two so I can study it more carefully and do some tests on it.

Yeah, I 'm all over that Jeff. I can tell you that it is hard, and does not burn like cherry. I might take it down to MacBeaths and see if someone there knows. Good excuse to go down there!
