Question What wood should i use?

Hey all, im kind of new to all this wood work stuff and hoping someone can help me
I want to make myself a wooden clock. I was recommended to use Russian birch plywood, probably because its smooth and tough, so that the gear teeth wont break of because of the constant friction.

Problem is, is that i have looked in most DIY stores (B&Q, Homebase) and i cant find it anywhere. Could be because the person who recommended it was in USA, and im in UK, but im not sure.... Can anyone either point me to another more common material or a UK supplier where i can find these materials.

Thank you for your time =)

Baltic Birch? Perhaps? I would go to a wood supplier though not a home supply store, you will get crappy wood there.
