Have you tried www.woodfinder.com ? It is a site that will give you a list of wood sellers near you. Some may also sell online, but I like to actually see the piece of wood I am buying.

I had a bad experience with Heritage -- they lost my order and I had to call about it. When they did ship, part of the order was missing (no note about the missing pieces). When I called, the owner said "so what's the problem, I did not bill you for the items out of stock". So my opinion is their customer service stinks. No apology!

Now about quality -- the cedar scroll saw blank they made (the owner did it himself) had poorly matched pieces. I have a 10" wide striped board (yellow, red, yellow, red, yellow). No offer to replace it!

This was my first and last experience with Heritage Building Specialties.

I've bought wood from Sloans, very nice people, everything came as promised. I like the http:///www.woodfinder.com/someone else mentioned, then you might get lucky and find some place close so you can go and pick your wood of the shelf yourself. Wood Finders lets you ad specifics to your search, like mail order, tone wood, recycled lumber etc.

As others have said, Paul Anthony at Memphis Hardwoods is an excellent supplier of hardwoods as well as baltic birch. I am lucky as he is only about 15 minutes from my home. I also purchase wood from Lakeshore Hardwoods in Pulaski, NY. Brian Leary is the owner there and will work with anyone. Each has exotics and many domestics. Brian's speciality always was domestics like cherry, maple, red oak, walnut, etc. but began carrying exotics during the past 2 years. Like Paul, Brian will also ship. Both are big supporters of the hobbyist woodworker but also provide services to many large professionals.

I have to put a plug in for woodworkerssource.net. They are in town and do a great job of helping you find wood, pick it, surface it and get it ready to go.

You can also check out deer56hunter on ebay. I am in the process of ordering some wood from them. I have a custom order and so far the price seems good, 20 sqft of red oak 3/16" is $35. They will custom cut any size, thickness you need. I will let you know more when I receive my order.

Thinboards

Sent this msg to sales@thinboards.com: "I'm running a Mac. Your site doesn't seem to be Mac friendly. Help."

Got this reply from someone called lexy@lexysbedroom.com

"I can help.
That's easy.
Get rid of the mac."

This is an actual msg exchage. As Dave Barry used to say, “I’m not making this up.”

Probably won’t be ordering from them anytime soon.
I have however taken her advice and trashed my Mac. I'm in search for something called a PC??? LOL

Hmm interesting ... both websites say they are operating from Illinois but the services offered by the latter seem to have little to do with thin boards ... I checked the website out .. purely in the interests of research .. Two family businesses and crossed emails? LOL

I have been to thinboards.com before. Its a one man operation. He buys most his lumber at a hardwood supplier about 10 miles from me. He then slices it on a bandsaw to whatever thickness you request, gives it a quick pass through a benchtop planer, and fils your order. He does not stock the woods in various thicknesses so he can fill your order, he has to go get the lumber, then mill it down for you.He has some stock of the 6/4 or 8/4 lumber of the common species, but anything special he has to go get first. I have purchased wood there once, and wasnt very happy with the quality of it, or the extra time involved. I drove to his place to pick up my wood, and luckily so, as my butternut I ordered was actually walnut, and had to show him the difference. After three or four days the boards started cupping a lot, so much that many of them could not be used without ripping them , and the planed surface left much to be desired. He is a nice guy though.
After that wood purchase, I learned why lumber sawn and dried with the intent of being used in thinner thicknesses is much better quality, theres a more even moisture content throughout the wood, and less stresses in the wood, so once machined to flat, for the most part remains flat. That is why the wood from Petersonscustomlumber.com is all cut from the tree to the sizes relative to the final thicknesses they will eventually be milled to.
Woodworkerssource.com is a wonderful place as wel. There is tons of information on whatever species you are looking for, in all sorts of sizes, and their selection is huge. Also, their orders are filled fast.Ive never been disappointed in their wood either. Dale
