Default Box full of wood

I'ld seen woodfinder.com mentioned on the forum a few times, so finally went to see if there were any exotic wood carriers near me. Found one about 90 miles away (not bad for Northern Michigan where the nearest mall is 70 miles away...) It just so happened that I had some work to do in that area, so drove the few extra miles to visit the place. (oh, and visited the mall while there too! )

Walked into the showroom and was overwelmed with all the choices! and the prices! talk about sticker shock!! I'm sure the prices were comperable to other lumber yards, but this was the first time I've actually looked at the exotic lumber. In talking to the gentleman there - he mentioned they have a cut-off box in the shop where the "scraps" are tossed into. You can purchase a banana box full of wood for $10!! That's where I headed - Not exactly sure what all I got, but all different thicknesses from 1/8" to a couple inches thick. Now I have no excuses for trying some small intarsia, and have lots of choices for the ornaments I make!
I did go in and buy one small board of bloodwood for a project I'm working on now - that cost me more than my whole box full of wood!

Sounds like you are going to have tons of fun with those offcuts.
Every now and again Windsor Plywood here sells bundles of offcuts but they cost much more than that. I would say you got a steal!

Sounds like you did well. For getting going in intarsia or other similar types of work, the offcut packs are always a great deal. Later, you may not need them the same way, but I still like to get them, and I have well over 1000 square feet of veneer.

Thumbs up

I've never been to woodfinder.com before. Thanks for mentioning it Theresa! I just found out there are a couple of stores closer to me than I thought. I was driving to Rockler about 60 miles away before.

I would have liked to have spent more time rummaging through the box of cutoffs, but it was cold and lunchtime! lol
Jim - Bob D wrote about the site in another thread - I'm glad he did!
