Default Thickness for Letters

I'm making letters out of cedar that will be 2 1/2 inches high. They will be used on an outdoor sign. How thick should I cut the letters? 3/8", 1/2" ?

Thanks,
Steve

Are they going to be glued to a backerboard? If so, thin is fine - 1/8 to 1/4.

If they are "stand alone", I'd go with 3/4 or 1".......

Either way, stack cut the "duplicates"

Bear,
they are going to glued to the sign. Will the cedar be stable enough at 1/4" It seems rather "flexible"

Steve, 1/4" should be fine if they are glued to a backer board. I would use exterior glue, good exterior paint or a marine finish. I made a sign for my grandson's slide set. I cut the letters from cedar siding, glued them to a piece of 3/4" oak and sprayed it with spar varnish. Has been outside for 3 years and still looks like new, it is protected somewhat by a small overhang.
