| Baltic Birch ply I have just acquired my first board of 1/8" baltic birch plywood and it is wonderful to work with! Don't laugh - the stuff you guys and girls take for granted are more rare than chicken teeth in S.A. and very pricey when you do find it.
It is a grade 3, I believe, but ten times better than the commercial ply we have to contend with. So I am very chuffed |

| Sue, I hope you enjoy your BB, but what in the world does the word "chuffed" mean? Is this a slang word specific to your region? |

| Thanks for waking us all up and bringing us to reality about what we take for granted. Sometimes we all need a reminder. I hope you enjoy your BB!

| Chuffed... you know how some songbirds puff up their chests and sing a happy tune? That's what it feels like when you're chuffed. It's one of those slang words that's very common throughout the Commonwealth and means that you're rather pleased, almost delighted.
BB ply is too expensive for me, Sue, even when it's available. I envy you.
Gill

Gill | Just out of curiousity, Gill, how much is BB in England?
I thought I was about to be able to get some 1/8th BB here locally - I've been nagging them for 6 months to stock it and last time I was in they had some on order .. I popped in today on the way intof Halifax but their supplier has let them down and it's looking like August now before they'll have any.. It was going to be around C$20 for a 5'x5' board.

| Thanks for explaining 'chuffed' Gill
If I convert, then I paid about $37 for a 4 X 6' board, plus cost of fuel to collect it (the importer is in Johannesburg), plus cutting in 4 pieces (so that it can fit in my car). The 1/4" is $65 for the same size board - It is on my 'wish list'
Dale, I have tried to order it from various suppliers in the US before, but they simply refuse to ship plywood to S.A.
The best thing about the BB is that it retains its shape! Local ply is always warped or cupped - especially the 1/4" - so you manage to use only a part of the board (if you're lucky). My last 1/8" Pine ply board was so warped, I could only make a few coasters from it.
No wonder Gill and I favour MDF for projects - it is not pretty, but it is stable! |

| The BB ply is not available to me locally in my neck of the woods either. I have to order it to get it. Most of the local lumber suppliers have never heard of it. I think someone has kept our region in the dark far to long. The manager at the closest Lowes did not know what I was talking about when I first inquired about the BB ply. Steve P. S.
Regarding your inquiry about Baltic Birch plywood, we must special order
it. Do you want it in sheets? Please contact my assistant manager Brian
Glotfelty as I am off Wednesday.
regards,
Andy Huntley
Store manager. No I want it as dust and will make my own sheets!!!!!! DUH!!! This was one of the replies that I received from the Lowes manager. Steve

| A sheet of 6.5mm (1/4") BB ply measuring 4' x 4' from Hobbies costs £25 ($50 US). Then there's postage at £5.45 ($10.90) to add. I can buy a sheet of 6mm MDF measuring 8' x 4' at my local store for about £8 ($16 US).

Gill | Ouch that is expensive! Doesn't make too much sense either since the Baltic is a damn sight closer to the UK than it is to the US/Canada!!
For anyone looking for a Canadian supplier with reasonable shipping rates this place sells 1/8"BB in 113/4 x 293/4 sheets @C3.75 (weird size!) Shipping on 16 sheets was around C$9 and they are fairly quick - 4 or 5 days from ON to NS. http://store.workshopsupply.com/cata...oducts_id=1400
