| Rare wood At the moment i have a shed full of wood, some common and some less common,...I recently got a few planks from the lumber yard....very nice red palm with darker stripes and stuff just like mahogany or Iroko but this type of wood had thicker stripes.
After browsing the web i fopund out it was red Palm wood, allthough it is not really thick enough for "real" intarsia but it is still handy enough for my butterfly collection that grows by the week.
At the moment i have cut the semi dried log of Holly and is in the "save" corner in the shed.
What is your special kind of wood that is special to you??
Danny

| red palm, that's good splinter in the hand wood. I can't remember for sure, but I think Holly is supposed to be dried in log form. Leave on the bark, paint the ends and store up high, like in the attic for at least 5 yrs. Holly is very unstable when drying, much like fruit trees, it loves to crack, check, warp, twist, you name it.
I have tons of variety to choose from, but Apple is my favorite. It looks good, has nice tight grain, carves well, and smells great.

| I've got some old, true mahogany I scavanged from an old bar. It's only 3/4"-thick...but I'm holding on to it for the perfect project. I've cut up on piece to make a puzzle I donated to charity and I'm making a love spoon out of the rest of the piece for my wife.

| I have got some white oak from the bottom of lake Michigan. It is 1 1/2" thick and was from an old ship. I have 10 boards that I have been dragging around with me for 40 years. Just haven't had the heart or the perfect project to use them on yet.

| I'd have to say mine is a pretty large bowl blank of some Australian lacy sheoak. Its just beautiful, so beautiful in fact that I am afraid to chuck it in the lathe, and attempt to turn it for fear that I will screw it up. dale |

| I've simply bought most of my wood. My favorites are those that are deeply colored - bloodwood, padauk, purpleheart, etc, etc.
I guess my other favorite wood I inherited from my father-in-law. I cleaned out his attic while others were going through the house. Got quite a big bunch of walnut, quite a bit of what I believe is chestnut and a decent amount of cedar (he wasn't a real exotic kinda guy). There may be some other species, but I haven't planed and sanded those boards yet. I did use a bit of the walnut and chestnut to make a Welcome sign for my sister-in-law's (and her husband's) housewarming a few weeks ago. Made it a bit special since it was her Dad's wood.
