| price of wood at our last fishing get together, the group gave me a $50 girt card for Southern Lumber so today I went out and spent it....
that lumber yard is about a 70 mile round trip for me and they have wood and sizes that I can't get locally...
I ended up getting a piece of 1/2 maple that is 6 1/2 inches wide and 3 1/2 feet long for $21.79, a piece of 1/2 Walnut that is 5 1/2 inches wide and 3 1/2 feet long for $28.12 and a piece of 1/2 Cherry that is 5 1/2 inches wide and 5 feet long for $31.58...
total bill..$79.48
I also priced the wood for the rocking horse and I'm looking at over $60 just for clear pine....
and to think that I give most of my projects away...

| Amazing isn't it? I bought three boards the other day for around $70, had to drive about 30-40 miles to get them. Only needed one.. . but you know. I usually don't even offer my stuff for sale. I visit relatives and see things that I have forgotten making. My walls in the house look good though!!

| 1/2 inch maple, 2 pieces at 6 inches by 24 inches long = $13.00
1/2 inch walnut, 2 pieces at 6 inches by 24 inches long= $10.90
1/2 inch cherry, 3 pieces at 6 inches by 24 inches long= $18.75
for a total of $42.65
add a shipping charge of $ 15.00
and your at $57.65
Thats the price from my favorite wood supplier, and i've never had a bad piece yet! You need to shop around Trout, there are better deals out there! Dale |

| My biggest problem is that I don't want wood that is 6 inches wide, I want it nearer 12" wide. Most of what I do is made for display on the wall. I have purchased quite a bit of wood on ebay etc, but nothing beats going there and picking out the board yourself.

| yikes.
All those woods are just plain domestic cheap lumber.
3 pieces of 6x24 is only 3bf in cherry the value is $7.50
2 pieces 6x24 maple is 2bf worth $4.
2 pieces of walnut at 6x24 is 2bf worth $5.
these are 1" thick prices kiln dried here where I live. at 1/2 inch, the price is considerable less because it's reject lumber, of course any board under 8' in length is reject lumber, because it's classed as a short, so really, I'm overestimating the value on that too. That's only 7 bf of lumber not worth $15. These are pretty standard midwest prices too. Unfortunately there's way more shysters out there than honest people. If you were a business, like even a small one man cabinet shop, you wouldn't dare pay 50-80 for that lumber or you'd be out of business in a hurry. These are also the minimum purchase prices, if you buy in 100bf or 1000bf packages, you get a considerable discount. You can do a buy in with a cabinet shop and purchase that maple down in the $1.25 per bf price range. That's what I do, and that's why I have such a huge pile of lumber. Normally the lumber is more than 1" thick too, so that you have the option of re-sawing to 1/2" and you are guaranteed to plane it clean at a value thicker than 3/4"

| Wow... not only do we pay the highest gas prices in the nation, it sounds like we pay the higher price for wood too...
here's the kicker..the 1/4 inch cost more than the 1/2 inch....
I need to shop around...
thanks

| Remember my truck? It's recycled oak skids and oak flooring. Is there a place around that toss's out old skids? You can plane them down and bisket them into some nice stuff sometimes. Now that you have a bandsaw... glue em' up and half them. There's places around here that toss out cabinet plywood just because it may have a nice curve in the grain or some other nice added attraction they don't like and we don't care. I'm alway on the look out for folks that toss out old solid wood furniture too. As far as the pine for the rocking horse.. can you get finger joint or pieced shelving lumber there?
My last piece of walnut - 5/4 x 9" x 9' ran me $5 / bd ft. but it'll be nice to resaw so I'll get double the stock for projects. Most other places charge $8-9 bd ft. down here. This guy is a sign maker.
I understand about the cost of 'giving stuff away'. If my wife only knew.....

| I'm sorry, I was under the impression Trout was looking for scrolling wood in a specific thickness, to be able to use it right away without more dimensioning. Yes, you can buy rough 4/4 wood cheaper than the thin scrolling sizes, but many scrollers do not have sufficient equipment to reduce a 4/4 plank into straight, flat scrolling wood. For convience, sometimes people have to pay a little more.
