| Name that wood My father in law brought some wood over this past weekend and asked me to cut him some new rails for his Java Joe (his sea going vessel). When I asked him what kind of wood it was he didn't know though my mind thought it was Padauk from the little bit of clean exposed grain that existed. Anyhow I began ripping this stuff across the table saw tonight and I about keeled over from the dust, it was a scramble for the dust collection system, the window and the garage door all at the same time. Anyhow, here are pics of the wood, you tell me, what is this stuff? Did I just grow a tumor in 10 seconds...I sure felt like I did.
The winning guess gets my personal thanks.

#2 | | Guest | Could be Paduak, I'd need to smell it to be sure. Photo color transfer to web could be off.
I'm thinking more Osage Orange. Known also as hedge, hedge-apple, bodark, bois-d'arc, bowwood, and naranjo chino. I understand parts of it is used in pesticide manufacturing, and dyemaking. If I recall, it is very rot resistant, which leads me to believe why your father in law may have used it on his boat.
After all that, someone more wood wise than I will probably agree, it's most likely Paduak. LOL | |

| Padauk has almost a cinnamon smell as it is cut.
It also has a metallic sound when it is struck. or at least the stuff I have used is that way.
Hmmm Bill that site is so full of info I can't believe anyone could know all that or have time to set it up.
That is a great resource

| How about Paela...that's a dense orange wood too. If the orange goes away fast and begins to darken to dark redish color within a few weeks, it's Padouk. Padouk sawdust is like a dye too...is it making a color mess everywhere?
Looks like Paela to me more than osage orange too, which is alot more yellow than it is orange. Paela has that same orange deepness too it and the color stays. The sawdust is oily just like padouk, but it doesn't stain things red.

| I still don't what it is nor did the Father in Law. He finds this kind of stuff all the time on his job, he just wanted a nice hard wood for new rails, he found this freebie stuff and asked me to cut the rails.
This stuff did leave one heck of a mess, those of you who have seen my shop can imagine my horror. Everything is covered in a very fine orange/red dust.
Well whatever it is is sure is pretty wood, the pictures I posted are just aftter ripping htem, I can't imagine what it will look like once it is finished.

| Forgot to say thanks for the input guys. I checked out the link and this stuff isn't Osage Orange. The color you see in the photos is the actual color.

| I have lots of pieces that look like that one and the place that sold it to me wrote down "tiger wood" on it.
