hi to all thought id say hi and introduce myself. Well im not really the practical type (strange introduction i guess!!), was at a market a while back and seen a young lad (and i bought one for my son) knocking out name signs with a little teddy or doll to order at 2.50 a pop. was dead busy and i thought wow what a clever lad. about 2 years later, or 3 weeks ago, at a car boot sale i seen a similar peice of kit which the lad was using and bought it for the pricely sum of 15 pounds. found out a day or so later it was called a scroll saw. now my initial intention was to copy what this young man was doing a few years ago, cant be that hard i thought. the lettering was basic bubble style, im not that artistic but hey! 3 weeks later, bought some bits of wood to practice on (not a clue what wood is what either, im a nurse for gods sake haha), and i find ou there is a whole world of people that enjoy this art, and the standards are, well mind-blowing, the work i have seen on galleries on the net. Machine is old, but it cuts, i am old but i can cut a bit haha. Anyway, started looking for templates as as said im no rolf harris. Read guides on how to cut, ways of lubricating blades (something i would have never considered in a million years), different types of woods, paints, pre-paints. All very very confusing, but i must say already pretty addictive. So here i am and that is me. If there are any people here who are experienced with helping TOTAL beginners, i would love any pointers, or an idea where to get started properly, things to read etc. Ill be looking all round this forum obviously anyway. So hi again and pleased to meet you all! alan. |

Hi Alan, You are not too far away from me. My advice would be to practice practice and more practice, there is no substitute for it. Try the local library, they often have starter books on scroll saw work and often have simple patterns for you to try. What make is the saw by the way. |
