Default Howdy

Well, I am pretty new to scroll sawing. I bought a saw at harbor freight in Feb. and used it one time to make some simple pinewood derby cars. Then it went into storage as I was finishing up my nursing degree and had NO time. Well I pulled it out about a month ago and sat down with my uncle (who has been scrolling for awhile) and started in. I was hooked, unfortunately after a week the bottom arm snapped in two...lol...you get what you pay for. I hit craigslist and got a delta 250 with books and blades for 45 dollars. So I am back in business, but looking into a new saw which I will buy in the next couple of weeks. Probably a Dewalt unless I find a deal on a high end one on craigslist. Right now I do not have a workshop or garage, so everything comes out and then gets put away everytime. So my needs are a little different...thinking of a mitre saw since a table saw will not work. Any advice on anything I should look into or get in the line of tools is appreciated. Of course I have some ideas already as I have been checking out the forum.
Thx
Mike

Well, Mike it sounds like you are really interested in Scrolling. Hope you can find a nice saw. I have the DeWalt 788 & love it. I also have a Q3 18 in. variable speed Delta. It's for sale, I just don't advertise that it is. My Grandson will probably like to have it, but, they live far away from me. You will probably need some type of sanding tool, like a palm sander. I use one on the backs of the piece I have finished cutting. I use my miter saw for picture frames. You will realise what you will need as you go along. Just do a lot of reading on our site for information that you will need. Good Luck with the new saw. Perk

If you can get a table saw you will need it you really can't rip lumber with a miter saw...but you can cut miter cuts with a table saw..so you can do everything with the table saw and re-saw with it...The miter saw is a luxury saw and the table saw is a staple for most wood workers.

Just my opinion.

Ok...so a table saw would be better. Will one of the small semi portable ones work, I don't think there is anyway I can put a full size one permanantly in the living room or carport. Maybe thats my cue to also build a shed. : )

Thx for the input so far.

I have found out that a drill press would really be nice a hand held drill is ok but its really hard to get some of those holes straight ecspecially when making 3-D ornaments. I'm new to scrolling to and cant wait to get a drill press now that I have discovered how much easier it would make life. So my plans are a drill press then a DeWalt 788 scroll saw.....

I don't have a foldup tablesaw but it would be better than a mitre saw.I use a Dremel drillpress for most of my drilling.Tony

Welcome aboard. If your looking for a new dewalt, I think Coming Soon... has about the best price on them currently.

Actually I was planning on getting a dewalt, but I have been given the opportunity to by a RBI hawk 220VS for 450. I know about the dewalt, what are your opinions in comparison to the Hawk for that price. Less then a year old.
