Default Just passing through

Hello everyone. My name is Ron, I live in Los Angeles, I am disabled and I'm primarily a stick carver. I'm also a senior member of the WCI woodcarving message board. I recently bought a used scroll saw I found on craigslist to help me with cutouts. It hasn't seen a lot of action yet.

What lead me join is I saw a small reindeer about 1 1/2" high, 1 1/2" long and about 3/4" wide. It was scroll sawed in a very clever manner and it was sitting on the lip of an inbox on a receptionist's desk. I thought if anyone here knows what I'm talking about and has a drawing or can tell me where I can find it, I may finally use my saw.

Thank you.

Was it a 3d ornament or was it cut from thin wood like plywood? And welcome to the crew.

Did they look like this? Compound cut. If so the pattern was in The Scroll Saw Workshop Holiday 2003 magazine.

Alan, it was a 3-d ornament.

Sue, the profile ws similar, but when you looked at it from the front, it also looked scroll sawed.

Stick carving you say.... hmmmm. I love the art of stick carving.

Sorry to see you're just passing through - I could see how compound cut (on scroll saw) handles would be well suited to stick carving.

I hope you find the reindeer you're looking for.

Take care
Toni

Hi Ron. I would love to learn to carve. I talked to a lady one time who carved tooth picks, I was so amazed. I do know that John Polhemus, has a pattern that is the Buck stops hear. and it is very much like the dear you are talking about, they can be compound cut in many sizes. and you could finish them with some more carving. Diana Thompson is a compound pattern designer. and sells many books on it. compound cuts are so fun. you do use the scrollsaw, and the pattern is glued to the side and front of a peace of squire wood. you cut the side, then cut the front. making it a 3d ornament. John is a member hear, so I hope he jumps in to give you some empho. hope you stick (HEHE) around. and join us. your friend Evie

Thank you all for your welcome.

Toni, perhaps I can seduce you into trying a stick. I love stick carving.

Evie, like everything else, carving just takes practice. If you took one of your scroll sawed pieces and rounded off the corners, you'd have the beginnings of a carving.
