Default another newbie

Hi all. Just a quick introduction. I have just recently started scrolling and can't find enough time for all I want to do. I'm in the midwest so cold weather is coming & I have the heaters set up so I can work out in the garage before it gets to cold. I have had a sore throat for a couple of weeks now & it started right after I started scrolling so I think it's from the sawdust since I was not wearing any protection or dust recovery. Since I started researching woodworking sites I should have had at least a good quality mask along with my always on safety glasses. Not harping just a word of warning to you from experience. Thanks for reading.

Welcome to this site Macman, if all you are using is a scrollsaw you could make a simple wooden box. Make it the right size to put a fan in one side and use furnace filters to clean the air going threw. It does not need to be large and can sit on the bench beside the saw.

Hi Macman - Welcome !

Alan's suggestions are great Just watch that those heaters don't create to dry an atmosphere as this can also cause a little more irritation from the dust.

If you have a small humidifier vapourizer you could try putting this near to where you scroll and switching it on whilst working. Also a quiet shop vac isnt a bad idea.
I have a noisy one with a long suction tube which works for me and only annoys the neighbours!!

Also watch out for the sanding operations. I find that that is where 90% plus of the dust comes from and its very fine.

Failing these tips you could always moved to Mexico and scroll outdoors in the warm winter sunlight and mild breeze which takes the dust away!!

the dreaded dust rears its ugly head again ! i would recomend a full face mask (i have a"Trend" ) not only does it offer full protection it also makes it very diffcult to smoke ! -rememember its not the dust you can see that kills you.- its that tiny little particals that get in your lungs that do you in !

Ahhh I've been to Mexico. It is just an extention of dusty Texas......LOL LOL LOL>

Dust mask and the box fan with a filter will help a lot.

Default thanks

Thanks to all of you for the info. I have set up a 20" box fan with pleated filters on both sides. I will be running it whenever I saw or sand. Also acquired a face mask which I will be using. Also thanks for the welcome. I didn't expect such a response.

Macman,

Welcome to the forum. I use a 20" box fan to push the dust out the window my saw is in front of, works great, but I just can't stand wearing a mask. Besides, I would have to cut a hole in it for my cig...lol
