Default Newbie saying hi to all

Hi everybody!
I am a country girl in the big city of Dallas (Garland actually). You really can get the girl out of the country but can't get the country out of the girl. Corny I know, but I am corny! I loved the movie "Mama Mia" Ha.
I don't know how to navagate my way around here yet and am lost but wanted to introduce myself. I do all sorts of crafting but have taken an interest in carving and scroll work. I am researching which saw to get on a limited budget. Sure would like to have some suggestions on which one would do the job. I am brand new to the field and am excited to be here.
Did anyone tell anybody that Logan likes berries....

Hey, I get to be the first to WELCOME YOU! I'm a Texas gal (birth right) living in Arizona--family in Dallas and McKinney. Sorry I can't help you with your Scrollsaw purchase question as my saw I bought at a garage sale. Works good sofar, but is a 1985 Taiwan model made for other brands to put their name onto. When and if I purchase a new Scrollsaw I'll be looking at the ones folks use here. Such as DeWalt, Excalibur, Hegner, and I know there are others, but these come to mind. I know you say your budget is limited, but don't settle for a cheapo saw--you won't be happy. Afterall, you want this to be a pleasant learning experience and a saw that will take you right into intermediate and advanced scrolling. From my experience sofar (only a month) after you get your saw, then it's practice, practice, practice.

Hi KathyRo!
Glad to meet you. Thank you for the advice. Did you do that gorgeous butterfly in your pic? What kind of scrollwork do you like doing? I want to make a wooden doll first.
I am thinking about getting the Dremel 1680. It seems to get some fair reviews from the guys here and very reasonable, except for the vibration issue. Have you heard anything bad about it?
TTYL,
H/Logan

Hi, there first of all Thank YOU and, for visiting my website always happy to have visitor's.
Yes, I scrolled the butterfly in my avatar it's 'practice exercise 4' in 'Scroll Saw Workbook' by John A. Nelson. I'm learning a lot from this workbook I highly recommend it especially for beginners.
Sorry, don't know anything about the Dremel 1680, but I bet someone will come along that does. I left you a post in another forum you posted too, with some additional info for ya.
Making a wooden doll sounds interesting, hope you will share it with us. If you want to learn to carve then check-out the WCI Woodcarving site. I'm over there too as 'Mottles'.

Hi again, thanks for taking time to help me so much. You must learn quickly to be able to do such a pretty butterfly so soon. You will be a master at it I am sure. I will go check out WCI Woodcarving site. The wooden doll is carved after removing bulk with scroll saw. I will post a pic when I am done IF I can figure out how to do that & if she comes out presentable. So nice chatting w/you!

Logan,

Welcome to the site, I'm not far from you, I'm in NW Ft. Worth. Always nice to get a new TEXAN to the forum. As far as your new saw purchase, I bought a cheap Craftsman first, a few years ago and got so disgusted with it that I sat it on the floor of my shop and didn't scroll again until 3-4 months ago. I finally purchased an EX-21 and haven't had a minutes problem with it. I saved for it for 3 months to be able to afford it (without my wife knowing!!!) She sure like all of the stuff I do for the house now...
You made a fantastic doll there, can't believe it was carved...
Enjoy the forum, and don't be afraid to ask all the questions you need to to get to where you want to be in scrolling. The pros here (not me) will help in a flash.

Oh my goodness, Logan your doll is a beauty, what a sweet little girl. I'm curious she looks like she is ceramic, but is wood? The red hair and blue eyes are just to cute. Looking forward to seeing what you do next.
