Hi Kathy and Mike, Thanks for the compliments... though I don't deserve the carving compliment, as I poured the doll from a mold in porcelain and cleaned, fired, painted and fired, installed eyes and put her together. I made her clothing too. Love making them. I was mainly trying to learn how to upload a pic. Thanks to Kathy, I was able to. All day today I labored over which saw to get. Hubby and I went to Hm Dep & Lowe's... no luck there. I "almost got the Craftsman" but sure am glad didn't since I heard what Mike had to say. I want the Dewalt 788 but can't afford yet. Thanks guys and sorry about not telling what my doll was made of earlier. TTYL, Logan |

Hi and wellcome to the crew! Try and buy a saw from a store that has a return policy. There are so many opinions on what a good saw is that you sort of have to guess which one will work for you. Dewalt has a 30 day policy of return for full refund for any reason. And there are others that have the same. If you go this route its a bit easier to get one you like. You could try a Dewalt and see what its like. But don't trust me I have 2 Dewalts and am very biased. Alan. |

I missed one point, I do not buy any tool without a return policy. The tool store here does this with every power tool they sell. Alan. |

Hi Logan, Welcome to the site. I pirchased a Hitachi CW-40 from Lowes. I have had it just over a month, so too soon to evaluate. So far, working great. Denny |

G'day Logan.... You've hit the jackpot with this group....Only relatively new and 'beginner' myself.--- _So_ much info and camaraderie here !! --- Probably unmatched, anywhere !! Your new saw..... The general advice is for the ones already quoted to you. I've yet to use one such . The bottom line is that you buy the best that you can afford ! I bought a 'Chinese' 16" for around AUS$159...... after reading the advice given to others I regretted it, initially , and suspected I'd bought 'bad' , especially since it had such poor 'quality control evident. However, having used it for several weeks now, after 'working it over' ( bearings and stuff).._AND_ getting some quality blades from over your way ( advised on these in this forum !), I have to say that my 'cheapie' is turning out some nice cuts. Just today, I cut up some 8mm acrylic with a 'finer' blade than I'd used before ( at 1700) and the cut was almost 'polished'. Very pleased with it ! Maybe it's like getting a camera..... the best expensive ones are _very_ desirable..... but , if your budget is limited ( as mine is) it shouldn't stop you from 'making a start' !! Y'buy the best that you can afford ( rather than _not_ start !! Just thought I'd throw in a 'welcome' and a few thoughts on 'buying a saw' ! )... Ray.

Hi everybody! Thanks so much for all friendly welcome wishes & willingness to share your own experiences. We went back to Lowe's yesterday and I got some special tools for my Dremmel tool. There was a cool cutting diamond disc that I am about to try out on the legs of my wooden doll. I cut her basic block shape out w/hubby's table saw and will attempt to remove excess and give general shape to her w/my new disc. Not a lot of excess to rid, so might work. Then I can start to carve in the rest. In the meanwhile... I am shopping around for the scroll saw of my dreams (and budget). I have found in my many experiences of life that when I get into a hurry to buy something and I am not feeling the peacefulness about it that I should, then I am to wait and keep lookin. Love you guys and am happy to be here with all the support! TTY'allL, Logan |

Hi Logan and welcome to the group. Or should I say neighbor, I also live in Dallas. Just down 635 a piece. Can't advise you much on the cheaper saws. I have had 3 Deltas and either wore them out or outgrew them and have had the EX21 for 3 years and love it, so signs of outgrowing it or wearing it out. Fran |
