Default First time posting

I just picked up a DeWalt DW 788 last week and just got my first shipment of blades on Monday so I guess you could say I'm a real newbie to scrolling. i've been a woodworker for a looong time so I know and understand wood. I build mostly furniture like coffee tables and cabinets but have also dabbled in boxes for jewelry and keepsakes. I used to do some carving many years back but arthritis in my thumbs and wrists make that a little too painful to be enjoyable anymore. I got the scroll saw because we just had our first grandchild arrive in March this year and I'd like to make some toys and puzzles for him. I also think scroll sawing could be an enjoyable way to spend short amounts of time in the shop without spending a lot of money on wood. I'll likely be asking lots of questions so bear with me.

Hi Blaine and welcome to the forum. Ask all of the questions that you like. There are some very talented folks here that can give you some excellent advice. Again welcome and congrats on the grandchild. Making things for him will be a treat for you. Steve

Thanks for the welcome Steve.
BTW here is my first try at a puzzle. It is taken from the current issue of the magazine and is cut from a scrap of 3/4" white oak I had left over from a keepsake box I had made recently. I only had one blade at the time which I think was a #7 so it is a little loose but all in all it came out not too bad I think. I have not put a finish on it yet. If anything it may get a coat of shellac wiped on.

Welcome Blaine. I can see you just jumed right in there and got a project done or almost done. and oak. that is not the easyest wood to start scrolling on. but looks like you did a nice job on it. so how do you like it. and does your arthritis hurt doing scrolling. I find if I were a glove it helps. glad your hear. your friend Evie

when making the first puzzles for my grandkids i figured out real quick to make them fit real loose. . for the first ones. if they didn't go together real easy they would give up to quick. . . now the boys (11 yr twins) come into the shop and make puzzles. . i like that a lot also!!

Welcome Blaine! Your off to a great start. And the saw you have will doubtless provide for many hours a enjoyment. I've had my 788 for about 9 years, and I love it! There are a lot of very helpful and knowlegable people here, so ask away. And post pics often, (we love that here).

Welcome indeed Blaine! Good to see you jump right in, make yourself at home, and share your successes. I'm in Ridgetown and get through Kitchener quite a bit. There's a scroller in your area who does exceptional work. If you ever get hung up and need help locally, let me know and I'll get you in touch with Tom. He's a GREAT guy and TONS of help.

Andy
