| New Guy Hello fellow woodworkers, my name is Bill but Bill and William were taken so I'm using the name of my current project "The Guy" (woodcarving of the Guy Fawkes mask). I'm a member of the WCI forum and I wanted to join this forum to pick up some scrollsaw tips and search the archives to see if anyone had done anything with the mask.
I have been woodcarving for about 2.5 years and I just bought a Delta Shopmaster to help with my laminated long neck swans and other duck heads. This is my first experience with a scroll saw and I really like it and I plan to do many other things with it after seeing the fantastic work you all do.
Happy Trails
Bill

edit to add; the mask is a picture I'm using for my mask and the RBM head is one that I did last year the hard way.

| Welcome to this forum Bill Guy.
The mask looks fantastic. Coming from a different angle at workworking, I am sure you will be able to add a different slant to our forum and add some new ideas. I am sure we can learn from you as much as the other way around.

| Lois and Dale,
Thank you for the warm welcome.
Lois,
I really like your work, I'm not sure if my new saw is good enough to do work like that but I know I'm not. I know this is a dumb question but on your Valentine Heart and Majesty Horse you used a "painted MDF Backing", what is that and how do you attach it to the project?
Dale,
Nice looking Chocolate Lab "Intarsia" (new word for me) on the chest. It looks like I'll need my other woodcarving tools along with my scrollsaw for a project like that, I really like that look.

| Welcome Bill Guy! I've always wanted to take a stab at carving. I was looking at the Willow carvings collection a Hallmark yesterday. I know that these are castings of the originals but they sure are nice pieces. My family and I traveled to Grandfather Mountain, here in NC a couple of years ago. There is a shop at the top of this mountain, and on the second floor, there is an old guy up there with a carving shop. He paints his stuff upon completion, and his work is remarkable. I'll have to look him up online sometime. Anyways welcome to the scrolling world, and maybe I can get some beginners carving tips from you. For starts, I'd like to know where to get some starter tools for carving.

| Hi Chris, beautiful Lathart on your website and blog. One of the things I really like about the work you and the others do here is allowing the natural grain to show either with a natural finish or paints thinned to a stain. I live on the lower shore of Maryland and decoys are a big thing here and that's what I carved for the first year and a half but on most decoys the grain does not show, but I don't think that habit will break easily until most of that expensive paint is used up. lol
When your question "For starts, I'd like to know where to get some starter tools for carving." comes up on the sister forum next door most of the long-time members refer them to Rick Ferry, although I have never bought anything from Rick I have always heard good comments about his beginner kit from those that have bought it. One note of caution if you buy his tools, be sure to use the safety equipment because from what I understand Rick is a master at putting a sharp edge on a tool. On Ricks wood page he has Heinecke Wood Products as a source and I have bought basswood from them and they do have quality wood at the best price I've found. I'm doing the final detail on a (9"x5"x12") bust of Diana (moon goddess), the wood came from Heninecke (my first order) and it's the best quality I've used so far. http://www.littleshavers.com/BeginnerDirectory.html

| Thanks for the link Guy. I did try a little bit of carving, with just a knife a little bit. Its something I really want to get good at someday. I have a couple flexcut knives and one other knife, plus a few el-super-cheapo carving tools from harbor freight (sharp enough to cut warm butter!). Thanks for your comments on the lab intarsia, there was no carving on that, but plenty of shaping (sanding). Dale |

| Thank you Evie, I have the basswood for the Guy Bust (9"x4.5"x12"),Plum for the base (3"x5") and finally came up with a pattern, so now it's time to make dust. lol
I got my new scroll saw and the TV together last night so I could watch the returns while cutting out Christmas Ornaments but I crashed after Texas came in and now just one more cup of coffee and it's off to work.
Warm Regards
Bill
