Default Looking for advice

Hello to all.

My name is Steve Riley from Aiken, South Carolina.
A little about me:
60 years old and still working. Employed by Carestream Health,Inc., as a Field Service engineer, servicing and installing Medical Imaging systems.
My hobbies include Motorcycling (Triumph), Photography, Air guns, and my Grandkids.

Only recently have I had the opportunity to do what I've wanted to do for years .... set up a small shop area in my garage. My first purchase was a drill press and my next is to be a Scroll saw. My first project will be some hand grips for air gun pistols I am rebuilding.

I don't want to break the bank (not that my wife would let me) and since this is my first saw I need something user friendly but well made.

I have learned that a good way to get good information is to find a forum dedicated to the topic, admit that you know nothing, and ask questions.

So please forgive if any questions seem elementary.

Sears has an 18" Scroll Saw on sale this week and I have seen some decent reviews but wanted to get some opinions from this forum. The Saw is Model# 21609 and on sale for $179.

If any one has any experience with this saw I would appreciate any and all opinions and or advice. Good - Bad - Ugly.

Thanks in advance
Steve....

I was searching to see what's out there in 18" saws and stumbled across this Dremel, which seemed a very good deal:

http://www.amazon.com/Dremel-1830-12...3390283&sr=1-4

Or here is a decent-looking Delta 16" for less money:

I think either the Sears or these others would be very serviceable as a general shop tool and would even carry you for awhile even if you should catch scrolling fever.

Welcome Steve. I started with a craftsman, and later moved up (quite a lot up, actually). On the Delta mentioned, caveat emptor. Some of the saws are great, but I believe there have been quite a lot of poorly made ones around. I would think to get it from a local (no shipping charges, either direction) place with a good return policy. The Dremel is well regarded here as an inexpensive beginning saw.

I've been using a Craftsman 16" VS for about 2 years now and am satified with its performance. Others here will say the same while others have had problems with some of the newer Craftsman saws. Delta is a good unit, too, so I'm told. As always, buy the best your wallet can afford. The Dewalt sells for around $450 and is my next saw when I can afford it.

Welcome to the forum Steve,
My first saw was the Dremel and I have to say that it was well made and provided trouble free use for the two years that I used it. I outgrew it so I upgraded to much more versatile saw. My father in law has the Dremel now, for about 3 years and has had 0 problems with it as well. Can't say enough good things about it as an entry level scroll saw. What ever you choose, happy scrolling and again, welcome to the group.

Welcome Steve,

I have a Craftsman 16" saw for about 2-1/2 years with no problems other than the bellows ripping ( Fixed with CA glue, still holding up). The table insert is poorly made, way to large of a hole, only the biggest pieces don't fall through. I made a new zero clearance one out of MDF. A blade tension lever in the front would be nice too. But for the price I guess I can't complain. I'll up grade to a Dewalt when it poops out.

Welcome aboard Steve. Looks as if we share a lot of the same interests as far as motorcycles and guns are concerned....not to mention scrolling. Here's an example of what you can do with nothing more than a scroll saw and a sleeve type drum sander. I made these grips for one of my target pistols.

Thanks Pete. Others have had some nice comments regarding the Dremel so I think I'll check them out.
