Talking Hello from a n00b

Hey there everyone, just thought id say hi to you all and make a short introduction.

Im a 20 year old (still feel like 16 tho ) Uni student from england. I am doing a degree in horticulture and currently poor because i bought myself a scroll saw and a bench drill to play around with, haha.

Ive made myself a little project that i want to do which involves making wooden gears. Ive found everything i need apart from the wood ive been trying to find. (There seem to be so many good wood websites for the US but none for the UK :S . What a pain) But im hoping to stick with using the scroll saw, and make many more interesting little pieces of art

Hi Alex, Welcome to the family. I am sorry that I can not help you with the wood in the UK. There are several members here from the Uk that I am sure can give you some info on what and where to purchase over there. Again Welcome. It is an addicting craft. Steve

Welcome aboard Alex* . There was a thread on here just within the last day or two regarding finding good quality plywood in the UK. Perhaps youve already found that thread, if not, search it out, and have fun scrolling!! Dale

Welcome Alex. A poor student, but with a tool to make some extra $ possibly. Good luck. Post your pictures of your projects.

Welcome Alex,

I've never made wooden gears, but know a couple guys who have. The comment they make about material is that using a high quality playwood like baltic birch, yields better results because solid wood will expand & contract so much with changes in relative humidity that the gears won't work properly on a consistent basis. Plywood is much more dimensionally stable and while it may not be as aesthetically pleasing in all applications, probably more practical for gears.

Good luck and have fun making sawdust!

Welcome Alex!

Glad to see you found our group and introduced yourself. I am also especially pleased to hear you a student.

There are many members from your part of the world, so they may be able to help you out with supplies you are looking for.

I'd personally love to see some of the work you are doing with your scrollsaw, and hope you take the time to post as often as you can, and maybe throw in a photograph of two for us to admire.

Take care
Toni
