Question Newbie with a hardwae question

Hi folks.
Just now registered and thought I would go ahead and introduce myself. I am new to scrollsaw work and decided it would be a good idea to get with those who have some experience.

I recently purchased a used Craftsman 16 in. scrollsaw Model No. 137.216010 and am faced with the problem that the variable speed control does not work. I have determined the electronic printed circuit board is defective but am reluctant to part with almost $50 to replace the board and wondered if anyone has run into this problem. It is next to impossible to get ahold of a schematic diagram for this circuit. I am sure there is a high failure component in the circuit that I could replace at small cost if I knew what it is.

I am not sure which model that is but Crafstman has used many scroll saw manufacturers in the past.
Can you post a picture of the saw, maybe then somone can Identify the original manufacturer and we could see if we could locate a schematic.
I have read somewhere that some speed controllers use opto isolators on a wheel mounted on the motor and sometimes the encoder wheel gets glogged with sawdust. I have no idea if this is the case with your model.

You say you just bought the saw. Why can't you take it back and let them know of the problem you're having? I know you said it is a used saw but there's always a chance you might hit paydirt. David

Welcome to the "family" wab0372........sorry to hear about your saw problem, but I'm with guitarman about returning it. Keep us informed about your solution though, as we all like to learn stuff.

Default Sears Craftsman Manufacturer codes

The manufacturer code 137.xxxx is a foreign manufacturer not US, but what else is new? You can call Sears customer service @ 1-800-469-4663 and ask for the manufacturer but then the question will be what other brand names the saw is sold under. Carl's hint on a possible source of the problem is very good and the suggestion of posting a photo may produce some help also.
Good luck with your searches.

Default 137.xxx Manufacturer

The manufacturer for part number 137.xxx is listed as Rexon on the OWWM site.

Good Morning,

Thanks to all that have replied to my question and especially the warm welcome received from so many members.
I have taken the suggestions from guitarman and wood dog and contacted the seller. He referred me to another gentleman that apparently handles the problems that come up. This circuit board is apparently an item that fails fairly often. He is sending me a replacement board that should hopefully solve my problem. This was an ebay purchase and it gives me great satisfaction to know there are sellers out there that stand behind their products.
Again I want to say thank you to all that offered timely and useful advise to this newbie to the world of scroll sawing.
