Red face so new I don't even have a saw

I am so glad I found this website today--what a great way to start a new year! I have had this project I've wanted to make everyone (uh, not all of you, sorry) for Christmas for like 5 years or so and have made a resolution to learn how to scroll saw so I can do it finally this year. I've read a lot on this website today and you all seem to really know what you are doing so I am excited. I had a friend who did scroll-saw stuff so I've seen someone do it, but I am really scared about cutting off my fingers. Does everyone here still have 10? :-)

I still have ten. I will admit, I have a few scars though, but none from a scrollsaw, although I cut myself with one once. A scrollsaw is not very dangerous as compared to a spinning tablesaw blade, or a router bit whizzing at 30,000 rpms. You will find scrolling very exciting and relaxing, and pretty safe. Dale

Best electric fingernail file on the market.LOL Welcome to the family. Like Dale said it is very relaxing, I still have all my fingers after scrolling for about 18 years. It is very addicting also. Steve

Welcome to the group. There is a bunch of really fine people here with plenty of advice and help to offer. As a beginner you will find a lot of options for saws ranging from $100 to over $1000, but don't let that confuse you as there are plenty of options for an entry level saw. If you have any questions feel free to ask and you will most likely get the help you need.

Like was already said, the scroll saw is a really safe saw to operate compared to most tools in the shop. If you do accidentally cut into your finger you'll know it before anything bad happens. Been there, done that. Just a little cut into the tip of my fingernail as I was trying to work a small piece.

Egglintine, you came to the right place to learn. Scrolling is very safe, and lots of fun. There have been lots of posts in the last couple months on different scroll saws and I am sure there will be lots more info so you can get a great idea of what people like. Welcome.

Welcome Egglintine. This is a great place for anything about the scrollsaw and how it is used. There are old threads comparing saws, but if you have a question that you don't turn up an answer to, make sure you let us know, or we won't be able to help you.

Been there, done that, and probably will again I have watched while the blade bit into my nail before, at least on the SS. For the fine materials I cut, I use a finer blade than most here, but even a large blade takes time to do anything serious. Just try a bit of 1/2" wood, and you will understand why you won't be cutting your fingers off. Getting a little blood smeared around can happen, though, if you take your eyes too far away for too long, but I wouldn't worry about it; just be aware that it is possible.

Still have all 10 of mine. I think this is a pretty safe tool to use, unless you intentionally place your finger into the moving blade. Have never heard of an injury from a scrollsaw. Lots of helpful people here.
Happy Scrolling

Default Hooooooooowwwwwwww Deeeeeeee

Lets see, all my fingers?? 10, 9, 8, 7, 6 on my left had and 5 on my right, that makes 11..........Yup got them all.

Welcome aboard. I not saying that you can't cut yourself with a scroll saw. But you have to try real hard to do any serious damage. Have fun and enjoy your self.
