Default Newbie scroll sawer/ member

Hello Everyone,

I finally decided to take up scroll sawing. My dad loved the hobby of scroll sawing after he retired and has made allot of very nice things. When he was still alive he let me have his starter saw Delta 16" ( 40-560 I think?) two speed saw to try as I always had a interest in it. I never did anything with the saw but bring it home and set it on the workbench in the garage. Last week I got it out and tried it out on some old scrap plywood from re-roofing my travel trailer. Now I can't seem to stop playing around with this little saw..I have been experimenting with different blades ect. to see what I like/dislike..Having lots of fun with it. I have some questions about this saw and other saws as well that I will post in the other forums..

Welcome! I hope you enjoy your visits here.

If, and only if, you have the 16 inch version of the 40-560, then:

Be sure to remove the two large pivot bolts that hold the upper and lower arm in place. Pay close attention to the two washers, one is flat the other is not. Make note of the order they are assembled on the bolt. Clean as best you can, both inside and the pivot bearing with mineral spirits. Remove all the caked on gunk. Re-lube with 20 wt or 30wt non-detergent oil. Best is the Blue Label 3-in-1 oil. Not the Red label most people have in the home, but the blue labeled can for electric motor oil.

Re-assemble but watch for the threading and torquing of the two large bolts, as they are threaded into soft iron which can strip out easily.

Way in the back is a connecting rod between the upper and lower arms. Lube with same oil as above. One or two drops in where the rod connects to each arm. BTW, this should be a loose floppy connection with no blade in the blade chucks.

welcome to the group. I picked up the scrollsaw habit about a year or so ago and really enjoy it. The only thing I don't like is the back aches from hunching over the saw. Very addictive hobby.

Welcome to the family. As Mike said above it is very addicting. I have been at it for around seventeen years and still learning. Steve
