Hi everyone. I just surfed across this site looking for some information and decided to join up. Not too familiar with the whole forum deal, but Ill learn as I go. I picked up scrolling in high school, completing the Defender Clock, a bunch of little fretwork designs, and started the Apostle Clock. Havent been doing much woodworking lately, but very interested in getting back to it. Looking at picking up a new Dewalt 788 in the next few weeks. Any suggestions?

Hey James welcome to the forum. You have come to the right place for Ideas, answers to questions, and real good advice. From what I have seen on this forum the Dewalt 788 is a popular choice. But I just got an Excalibur EX21 last summer. Great saw also. I don't think you would go wrong with the Dewalt.

Welcome James, Good choice right out of the gate going for a 788. I've had mine close to 10 years now, and no regrets what-so-ever! I think you'll like it here, the people are great. Any question you might have, you'll get 3 or 4 good answers. There are alot of very helpful people with lots of experience to share. Make some dust and show us the pictures!!

I'm going to put the same thing I just said to another person. I used to have a DeWalt but after having to Fixit again and again myself, most of the time it looked like this, because I was constantly having to sometimes take it completely apart and reassemble it. ![]() I then decided to upgrade to an RBI Hawk 226 is far superior to a DeWalt and I was able to get it used off of eBay for about the price of a new DeWalt. I am Very happy not to deal with the knocking sound, blades slipping out of the clamps, blades breaking, and when the blade does break being jabbed in the finger because the DeWalt is unsafe. On a parallel arm saw the upper arm will live the blade out of the way when the blade breaks. On the DeWalt and Excalibur saws the blade continues to move up and down and the arm does not lift out of the way so it can damage your fingers or your workpiece. Double link parallel arm saws may have low vibration but they are also not very safe. And in the case of the DeWalt, not very good quality. That is why I suggest a RBI or other good parallel arm saw such as a Delta P 20, Hegner, Or P.S. Wood. ![]() Some people swear by the DeWalt, some people like me feel like swearing at the DeWalt hope this helps, Red Beard __________________ Last edited by Red Beard; 12-04-2007 at 10:10 PM. |

James Welcome to the group. I have two 788s like them a lot, they have been real good saws. Got more questions? Just fire away, someone here will have the answer. Dave |
