Just a polite hullo. and of course a query .
I'm passed my sell buy date and enjoy my retiral, freedom. I recommend it to the younger members.

I use a scroll saw on occasion but have been think of replacing the sheapo I have.

Carving is my real interest. When cutting out the silhouette I'd like to use a bench scroll saw. I'd need a saw which would make a 3" cut. .

Anyone do this, any suggestions on brand and model.
Thanks

Aulddiy:

3 inches??? that's what 7.5 or 7.6 cm?

Wow, I think you just moved up to the Bandsaw plateau. Just a bit different air up there.

Largest recommended scroll saw is about 1.5 inches of wood, although, some have done a 2 inch in a pinch. I understand the UK VAT tax is a killer on that model scroll saw.

Maybe Gill, from the UK, has a thought about the UK made Diamond saw and how thick it will cut. But 3" is a really big bite for a scroll saw.

(it's all about clearing out the wood chips out of the kerf as the saw cuts, no problem with a bandsaw, very much a problem with a scroll saw.)

But a warm welcome to you anyway. I hope someone else will chime in with a solution to your question.

Hi Aulddiy

I can't think of any scroll saw available in the UK which will cut wood 3" thick other than the Diamond. Even so, it wouldn't be terribly fast and it would take up a large footprint in your workshop. As Phil says, you'd probably be better off looking at a bandsaw. If you do opt for a bandsaw, I'd suggest you ditch whatever blade is supplied with the machine and buy a good one from a reputable manufacturer such as DureEdge or Dragon.

I hope I don't get in trouble for directing you to another forum, but the guys on UKWorkshop would probably be able to give you better advice than me about which bandsaw to choose.

Gill
