Smile Hello from Porto Santo

Hi everyone!
I'm Portuguese, I live in the small island of Porto Santo/ Madeira Archipelago.
I've been lurking here for a few months, now I take courage enough to say hello and, most of all, thank you for all that I've learned from you
In Portugal we do not have the tradition of working wood like you do, and most of the artisans simply doesn't use a scrollsaw...You have been my teachers and my inspiration...for that, I'll be forever gratefull.

Unfortunately, often, I just can't open this forum, my computer keeps giving me "page not found", so hope you understand if I don't reply mediately to any question..but I'll try everyday to do it...

Welcome Joana Ricardo.......your location is so far away, but isn't it great that through the Internet you are able to be a member of this scroll saw "family". This as I have found out is a great helpful forum in so many ways.
Enjoy....come back often, and again welcome.

Welcome to the family Joana. Glad to see that you have joined us. It sounds that maybe you will corner the market in your community if no one else uses the scroll saw. It is a very unique tool that can be used for many different applications in wood working. Hope to see some photos of your work. Any questions just ask away. Again Welcome. Steve

Joana:

A hearty welcome. I hope you enjoy your visits here.

But a quick question or two if I may.

I Goggled your island map location. You appear to be on an Island a few hundred kilometers due west of Morocco, North Africa. You also appear to be some what West of Ireland's east-west location. Would that mean you have long warm sunny weather moderated by the cool Atlantic ocean waters, with great sport deep water fishing all year long, yes?

So may I presume your island is swamped with tourist all year long. And you claim no other artisan is working the tourist trade with scroll sawing. Hm-mm

And you are telling us this just as the COLD winter months are closing upon us Northers climate souls with the short days and long cold nights ahead. Snow and sleet and windy cold weather.

Are you getting a commission from the Hotel for tourist bookings?

(and Yes, welcome to the site.)

Hi,
thank you all for your warm welcome.

yes Phil, I do live in a very mild climate, we just d'ont have Winter as you do, always somewhere between an hot Spring and a very warm Autumn, as this island doesn't have much water,it looks a little bit like Africa (Cabo Verde Islands) on the other hand, the waters are always very clear (I'm a diving instructor)and we can make great dives all year round...sometimes I miss the cold of Winter and a good fireplace, but when it comes to dive I thank God for this 20º C in the water, loads of nice fishes and a very peacefully way of live!
Our Island is not very much visited by tourists, most of them just stay in Madeira, and just a few come here ,it takes 2.5 hours by ferry and 20 minutes by plane.

As we run the diving center, I do really have nice prices at the hotels... if you want to spend a nice vacation here, just let me know!

About selling my works with the scrollsaw...well, I just can't put a price on them, so most of them are gifts for friends, or to be sold in "charity for animals" ,anyway, I'm just a beginner, it will take very long until I find my work good enough!

Most of the time I use my saw to make small furniture for doll houses that I'm building with a friend, I fell I have a long way in front of me to make the beautifull things you do!
