Hi everyone,

After many years of wanting to take this up I've finally taken the plunge. I bought a cheap saw (Ryobi) last year to make quick work of my son's pinewood derby car. Car came out nice but when trying to really create something a little more intricate I was ready to throw the thing out the window. For my first official project I took on one of the window ornaments in the holiday edition. I know I should have started with something easier but I'm a glutten for punishment and they didn't turn out that bad when viewed from a distance. I'm sure a lot of it was being a newbie but after reading alot of the great info on this board and others I knew if I was going to stick with it that saw was not for me. Another member suggested to someone on here that you can get some great deals on ebay and craigslist; well he was right on that. I just picked up a type 1 Dewalt 788, stand and light used once or twice for next to nothing. I'm looking forward to really learning more from everyone and sharing what I learn.

Welcome. Good luck with "old yella". Seems to be a fine machine. Sawing ability will improve over time. You found a great site.
Happy Scrolling Holidays.

Welcome to a great place. The more you cut, the better you will get, indeed. I think everyone here notices what could have been done better when looking at old projects. Keep the saw running, and you will soon be helping someone else get started.

Welcome to the group. If you don't throw anything away how do you start fires in your fireplace in the winter? Good luck and have fun.

Thanks everyone! I wouldn't dream of throwing anything away. I spent to much time on them!! Besides, they'll look good on the tree buried in the branches!

Thanks again!

Welcome,
I, too, started with a Ryobi because it was cheap and I didn't know any better. After a couple years of cussin' I gave it to my son-in-law and bought a Dewalt. I hadn't known what scroll sawing was really about until then. It doesn't pay to buy cheap tools.
