I just might come and I am in Iowa. Some of the comments I am seeing here are what keep many picnics form ever happening. People stating I will come if it convenient, if it is not too far, what within an hour drive, nobody is definate they are coming. Second thing is someone has to plan it. I what I have been involved with SAW on the expos here are a few things you need to keep in mind.
The show area needs to be maybe 20,000 square feet. You need motels close, approximately 100-150 rooms, and at a low price. Someone needs to sign to pay for the hall, if not enough people attend and the event goes in the hole someone is out the money. You need about 10 people minimum and up to 30 to help in setup and getting the vendors in and setting up dinners and seminars if you are going to have them. Someone needs to contact all the vendors and get them to commit if they will come. Advertising need to be done. And a whole lot more.

I think it depends on what you want to accomplish. If you want to put on an event, like the Texas Scroll Saw Picnic, the Mid-West Scroll Saw Trade Show, or the SAW Expo, you will need the things Rick outlined.

But, when Dale Whisler started the picnics, it was a picnic on his property. Scrollers got together, interacted, swapped stories and techniques, and just had a good time with people who shared similar interests. That can be as simple as booking a pavilion at a local park!

Rick is correct if you want a large picnic. Being large is not always the way to go though. We could muster up 200 people in N. Georgia alone. There are several county parks that will loan or rent you the space. LOL.... maybe we could outdo those woodspinners.

I work full time in Greenville SC, but would like to make it to a picnic in GA. I am a member of an internet group of NC woodworkers (Id plug the site if allowed). We started up several years ago, and represent all types and skill levels of woodworking. We started an annual picnic around Raleigh that is just a day of fellowship and food (usually everybody bring something). We started small, but it has grown increasingly larger every year. We also gather at the woodworking show in the fall in Hickory. One of the vendors is a great supporter of the group, and helps us with that one. Getting vendors would be great but it's not necessary for a fun day. Have a show and tell, a little food and great fellowship.

I'm in Albany, GA and I'd love to attend. I don't know anyone who has a scroll saw. Thank goodness for the internet.

OK. Who's going to organize one down there? Any of you down there in GA?
You could have in the summer and work in a barbecue contest and scroll saw picnic on the same weekend.
