| Scroll Saw Contest Hi everyone. Just thought I would let you all know. The round ball that was featured on the last cover of Scrollsaw Workshop, which won the contest, will be on display at the Saw Expo in Wilmington, Ohio Jully 12-13. I had the opportunity to visit with Tom the designer and see how he created this piece. The ball is one of four peices that showcase Tom's talent and design ability. The total display measures about 7 feet long and 6 feet high and is quite an accomplishment.
An engineering marvel. Tom has taken scrollsawying to another level. Might be worth the trip just to see it. Toby |

| Thanks for that tidbit Toby. I am planning to go to Ohio for the SAW Expo (my first) in July. I would really like to see that sphere up close and personal.

| Tom has sent me a video of the entire project in motion (yes, it moves!). As soon as we get it posted on the site, I'll let you know!

| That is truly amazing. Tom's handiwork properly belongs in an art museum. He should be proud of his accomplishment and I for one salute him.

| Wow! As if the sphere were not enough to celebrate. He truly is an artist. I hope I can make it to the fair.

| While an impressive piece of work, I'm curious how many people will actually make one of these for themselves? I know it won't be in my to do pile (ever). I guess I don't understand why something that so few people would actually make would win the design contest. Had it been a best project contest similar to the stuff at picnics I could understand but as something to be featured in a mag for other scrollers to make I don't get it.
This is not to take away from the project as it is very well done, I just don't see the appeal to the typical scroller.

| Good question Kevin.
The point of the design contest is two-fold.
1. To continue to push the envelope about what is possible to create with the scroll saw and force scroll sawn art to receive the same respect as more traditional art such as painting, photography, and sculpture.
2. To identify new and talented designers that the scrolling public at large should be exposed to. In other words, a way for us to discover talent that we may never have come across otherwise.
#1 clearly pertains more to Tom's piece.

| Bob,
I'll buy that.
I am going to start a new thread over in the off-topic area to respond to your point 1 though.
