Hi Adam

I've got a very old Hegner 1 single speed and it's a lovely saw. The variable speed will be a definite improvement but I notice that the Hegner 1 doesn't have the tension release lever of the Hegner 2. That's a very valuable feature because it speeds up blade changing enormously. If you won't be making many piercing cuts, the Hegner 1 would be an admirable choice but if you're looking for a saw with more flexible uses, perhaps a Delta 40-570 or Axminster AWFS18 might suit you better.

Hi Gill,

Thanks for your thoughts on this much appreciated

The Axminster looks like a nice machine have you ever used one ? how do you think it would compare to Hegner build quality wise? I would like the multicut 2SV but it is a bit out of my price range at the minute.

I may well go for the Axminster over the hegner

Regards

I'm afraid I've not used the Axminster myself, Adam, but there are other members of this forum who have recently acquired one and they'll be able to advise you from personal experience.

In your own time, Gary and Chris...

Adam,

Have you checked the "contact points" yet? (I forget the technical name for them). Your problem may be nothing more then a bit of routine maintenance needed. I believe there are two of these on the Dremel and are very easy to access on the left and right bottom side of the saw. If you still have your owners manual it will explain what to do. Lastly, Dremel does have good customer service support, not as good as Hawk but they are proactive and friendly none the less.

To be honest I haven't....guess I should take a look especially as I am having trouble with the shop I got it from giving me a refund even though I havent had it that long.

I will take a look in the morning see if I can fix it..although it still bugs me that the miter guide rubs on the sanding disc at certain angles.

thanks for your help appreciated I will let you know how I get on

Adam -

I have an Axminster AWSF18 and I'm very happy with it. It is heavy - over sixty pounds weight - and almost completely free from vibration - also very quiet. I have been using it for two or three months now with no problems. It seems to be very much a Hegner clone but with a slightly rougher finish. £200 very well spent in my view.

Some people have bought the Hegner special quick release clamps and clock keys which fit the Axminster so you can "upgrade" the clamping system to the best Hegner style if you need to make lots of inside cuts.

On the Delta it is beginning to look as if Delta might be withdrawing from the UK. Their servicing agent no longer handles repairs and people are saying that they can't get spares easily. That would be worth looking into before you bought a Delta machine in the UK.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your views on the axminster I think I shall be getting one very soon handy to know that it will take the hegner clamping system as well. I must say it looks and sounds from what you say as good as the hegner without the extra price tag for the name.

I spoke to toolbank about Delta and they say they have been taken over by Black and Decker...and they have decided not to supply Delta products in the UK

Thanks again

Not just the UK, Adam. It's seems to be going that way in New Zealand too. There are still some delta 40-540's coming in but impossible trying to get a P20 now. A blow because they are a nice machine. But then we are just a blip in the ocean - way, way down under!

Adam,

Sorry for the delay in posting - only just noticed this thread.

I have an AWSF18, and am very happy with it. I got the stand from Axminster as well - it isn't really big enough for the saw, but I got round that by bolting a paving slab to the top of the stand, and then bolting the saw to the slab.

Doing this added some extra mass to the stand and gives a nice vibration free cut.

I got some blade holders, clock keys and screws from Hegner, together with the quick release blade clamp, all of which fit fine and I would strongly recommend.

It is a lot of saw for the money (cast iron table like the Hegner SE). The only slight grumble is that the table insert supplied doesn't sit flush with the table, which means that you keep catching the corners of your work piece, but I overcame this by cutting a new insert from 3mm birch ply, and sanding the edges flush with the table - it is as smooth as silk now!

I think that if you go down this route you will be more than happy.

Regards

Gary
