Sanding mop speed on drill press - Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts Message Board

I just purchased a sanding mop that is appropriate to use on a grinder or drill press. I assume since most grinders spin at 3000 rpm + that I should set the drill press speed up high also.

Any words of wisdom?

One piece of advise I can offer up. KEEP THE PIECE MOVING!!!!!!!! If you hesitate, you will get gouges in the wood. This is from experience. I run it at full speed on my drill press (about 3000 RPM) without problems.

I can't remember where I read it, but I seem to recall that mine should be 2350 max. In any event, hang on. Even so, you will probably launch a few things across your workshop if you get the end into the mop.

The faster you spin the mop, the longer they will last and the better they will work. 6" mops need to be spun between 2000 and 3500 RPM's. 4" mops need to be run between 4000 and 10000 RPM's. Cordless drills and some electric drills do not have the required RPM's to achieve optimum results. "
