For what its worth he also wins (at least compared to me) the most CNC machines, lathes, scrollsaw patterns, and fire trucks.

| I've got a craftsman 16" saw that I bought in 96 and I am still using it. I have recently become more involved in the hobby because when I bought this saw I had 2 children, one in kindergarden and another 3 years younger. I now have 4 children, the youngest is 3 and the oldest is 15. I really need to update this saw and I'm thinking the DeWalt will probably be the more affordable option for me, although I did meet another scroller the other day that told me to make the plunge into an Excalibur.

| Well I took advice from many of you on the DeWalt 788. I should have it by this Friday 8/10/07. will try it out and from the sounds of it show you some of the portraits and other projects I have lined up. Thanks to those of you that helped me in this decision. Hope to be more active on this site to in the near future.
Thanks

| May as well put in my 2-cents worth. I have gone through two craftman 16" scroll saws in the past 14 years. I bought a DW 788 two years ago and wish I'd known about it much earlier. I love it and it gives me what I want and need in a scrollsaw. I spend 2 to 4 hours a day in my shop and my 788 keeps performing for me. If it tears up and I can't fix it I'll probably buy another one just like it. David |

| Excalber Rules Of course I have only have the Dermel 16 and 18's to compare it to. The Dremel was good for the price around $200. But I had a lot of problems with both of them. But like is has been said before you really cant compare Apples and Oranges. There is no comparison between EX-21 & Dremel. ![006[1]](http://www.scrollsawer.com/forum/images/smilies/006[1].gif) That's just my unqualified opinion.

| I originally began using a Craftsman 16". Had problems with it stopping running until finally I couldn't get it to go again. I bought a DW788 factory reconditioned from Toolking for $345 and love it. It's also easy to take apart to service if need be. It has a L shaped attachment below the table that's bolted onto the lower arm housing that sticks out just past the hole that the sawblade goes through on the table. Haven't figured out what it's officially supposed to be used for, but it sure works nicely in holding a dust catching spout from my big dust collector. I would go with another DW788 in the event I had to buy another machine. So far it's perfect, and I use it frequently (3 to 4 hours a day.) |

| Interesting stuff! I just started scrolling and was trying my 1st project when the tensioning mechanism on my 21 yo Craftsman gave out. I was in the process of trying to repair it when I was in Lowe's and saw the Hitachi CW44 for $159. I bought it and have tried it out. Since I am a rank beginner and had used nothing but pinned blades before last Friday I have a learning curve to climb. Changing the pin-less blade on this machine is no worse than my Craftsman. In fact it is better because you do not need a wrench. It has a flip lever on the tension knob so that once you figure out what the best tension is, when you need to change a blade you flip the lever, make the change, and then press the lever back down and you should be ready to go again. It hasn't worked out the well for me as I am somewhat clumsy still with blade changes. It adjusts from 400 - 1700 SPM and doesn't seem to have much vibration (of course I have not used a DeWalt etc). It comes with a work light and a blower that actually works. I have not seen anyone mention this saw on any forum so either no one knows about it, or it is so horrible that no one mentions it for fear someone might get one ;-) For me it was all about price. With 3 freshmen this year funds are limited.
So does ANYONE have any experience with this saw? Am I just going to hate it the more I use it? Or is it a reasonably priced moderately good saw that should hold me until I decide how serious I will be?
Thanks,
Doug |
