Default Dirt cheap DIY Press Drill Spindle sander

I built a Spindle sander. It was easy to do and very cheap too!

The drums are made of dowels ans neopren cushions (I used computer mous carpet for the neopren) and a 1/4" threaded rod as the shaft. For large drum, use 3/4" MDF instead of dowels. At the end of the shaft there is a threaded nylon spacer glued with epoxy. The spacer sits in a bearing that is placed in the table base. So when sanding, it does not force the chuck sideways.

The table top height is adjustable to take advantage of the whole lenght of the 4-1/2" long drums. At the back of the table there is a hole for the shop vac hook up.

The inserts are made of 1/4" hardboard.

Just put the sanding drum shaft in the press drill chuck. Fit the other end in the bearing, clamp the table on the press drill.

The plan is available in the ShopNotes magazine, issue 81 (May-June 2005).
