Finally Upgraded

After my usual long period of research and agonizing, I finally upgraded from my Delta SS250 to a DeWalt 788 over the weekend. So far, I'm pretty impressed with it. I'm still going through learning pains with blade installation and the bottom clamp, but I'm guessing that is mainly a matter of technique. Both the lack of vibration and the top feed capability are great. (Also, having a blower that actually works is pretty cool too). I was wavering between the DW788 and the Delta P20, and had decided to go with whichever I came across a good deal on first - DeWalt won out.

Just raise the arm, put the blade in the top clamp first, then lower the arm. The bottom of the blade should line up with the lower clamp no sweat!! I've done it so many times now I do it by "feel" alone. Hope that helps a little!! Congrats on your new saw!!

Once I get the blade initially mounted, it's a piece of cake to top feed and get it back in the bottom clamp. My problem (not really a problem, just a matter of getting used to it) is in initially mounting the blade. It seems like the blade is almost too short to fit in both clamps at times. I guess I just got spoiled with the clamps on the Delta - never had the issue there. Anyway, I'm sure I'll get used to it and I sure do like the way this thing runs and cuts.

Congrats on the new saw. When I got my DeWalt I wondered the same thing. What I started doing was noticing the position of the blade in the top clamp when installed correctly. Then when I would put in a new blade I installed it in the top clamp first at the point I knew it would sit correctly and then installed it in the lower clamp. That way I can do it without leaning over to see it. I'm 6'4". Even on a stool that's a ways to lean over. I try to do everything I can to save my back. Hope this helps.

I just spent a few hours the past few nights teaching a beginner on a DeWalt. He didn't want to bend down and I know I never do. The best thing I came up with for him was to feel the blade going into the slot of the lower clamp with the thumb of the left hand (it's better oriented than the other fingers when you have your hand down there) while turning the knob with the right hand. Reverse this if you're left handed.

I actually do this with one hand, feeling with the thumb of the right hand while twiddling the knob shut with the other fingers. But that's for a future lesson.

Thanks for the suggestions - I'm sure I'll get the hang of it eventually. In the meantime, it's worth the initial hassle just for the joy of cutting with this thing. I really would not have believed how much difference there is between using this one and my old SS250.

I agree with you Frumper. I upgraded from the SS250 to the DeWalt as well. I was amazed at how much more enjoyable it was. I regret not starting out with the DeWalt but now I have a better appreciation for a decent machine. Happy cutting!
