Depends on which motor you are fortunate enough to get. Some of their motors are imported and are very loosely wound.
I have a 12" Delta variable speed that I really like.

Don't be afraid to look at places like Craigslist as well. Just looked through my local one and saw several small, benchtop DP's, including Delta's for under $100. Personally, they are all pretty similar until you start getting into the older, heavily built, mostly cast iron presses from days gone by.

Just to be clear, all of Grizzly's motors are imported. They are an import company. They are probably one of the few companies that didn't start manufacturing in the USA and then cheap out and send their manufacturing overseas. Some of their products are better than others. I don't know their drill presses personally, but their current line of tools is quite a bit better than what they had out 20 years ago, while Delta and Powermatic's tools are quite a bit worse than what they had out 20 years ago. Give the choice today between a new Delta and a new Grizzly, I would take the Grizzly. My drill press is the Ridgid 15" floor model. I bought it because I was doing a job and needed one in the middle of the night, Home Depot had it in stock, and the client was letting me tack the full price onto my bill. That was about 7 years ago and it's run just fine. It's not my dream drill press, but at $299 it is a fine machine. Okay, I just went to HD's website to see what the current price is and it's $499. For $499 there must be better machines out there. If I were planning a purchase I'm with Richard- I'd be looking at Craig's List, but I'd be looking for an old cast iron unit like a Walker Turner or an early Powermatic. I prefer a floor model to a benchtop because bench space is at a premium and I don't want to sacrifice any to a drill press nor have to move it up and down as I do with my planer.
