Default Variable speed foot pedal

I have a Dewalt 788 and I am looking for a good variable speed foot pedal as it would be nice to be able to control the speed with my foot. Can someone recommend one? Thanks.

No. One thing I learned is you cannot use like a sewing machine foot switch. I can't explain the technicalities but it is something to do with the way a scroll saw motor is wired. I was told you will burn up the motor. I urge you not to get one of those.

Woodhog... I have both the 'variable speed' foot pedal and the 'on/off' foot pedal switches from Harbor Freight...use them on my DeWalt 788 and have had no problem with either... I prefer the on/off switch and have it mounted on my DeWalt's stand about knew high so I can turn it on and off easily...Like many others, I 'taped over' the DeWalt's on/off switch as it has problems with dust and everything seems to work just fine...check the site out for other comments on these same switches...and I think you'll be as pleased as I am...and only about $10 or less on sale tooooo! Safe scrolling to you!

The Dewalt has an electronic speed control: CB and Pot. [286308-00] - $74.31 at eReplacementParts.com

It is quite possible you will fry either the motor or this board by using an external speed control I am surprised that Codger has been able to get away with this for even a short period of time. Seeing as the motor costs almost half the cost of the saw... I wouldn't dare do it. I can see no real reason to have to vary the speed as you cut anyway.

Woodhog...Please accept my apologies!!! I somehow got things mixed up and mistook my switches for being 'variable' ... they are not!!! They are both 'on/off' switches from H.F. and as I said, I have the 'bump on/off' switch mounted on my DeWalt's table legs...very handy... Didn't like the 'Dead Man' typle 'off/off' switch as I had to have my foot on it all the time for it to operate my saw... Really sorry about the mix-up with a 'variable speed switch' and THANK Keith for setting me straight... I even had to go out to the garage and besure I in fact had the right type as he scared me with the comments about burning out the DeWalt's circuit board!!! Would really have hated misleading another scroller and possibly causing damage to his saw...soooo THANKS Keith for setting the record straight and also letting me (and others) know NOT to use a variable speed controller!!!
Again sorry about that and Safe Scrolling to you both!!!

Woodhog,

A tip for you regarding the foot pedal. I have an on/off that I got from Wildwood Designs which works great. The thing you have to watch is I would use it to "pulse" the motor in corners and tight spaces. I had a nut on the drive cam on the motor linkage come free which I believe was caused by this. Put it back together and no problems since but thought I'd pass it on.
