Default Used scroll saws..Have you noticed?

Ok I have been watching some of the better saws on Ebay and other places for the last few years thinking one day I will find a deal on a better upper end saw.

Something that strikes me is the fact that a Dewalt 788 saw sells new for around $500 + or - a few. Yet used still a lot of times bring in $350 -400 or so dollars. Then look at a higher end saw like a Hegner or Hawk and they sell new for around $1000 + or -? ...Yet a used one still only brings $300-500..Ouch thats a big lost for someone out there selling one of these units..

I been thinking that when I get enough money saved I would buy a Dewalt or Ex21..I would most likely buy new because its not that much of a savings to get a used one..Also its not too much more to just get a EX21..Not sure about the resale on a Ex as I never really see any for sale..Maybe they are just that good of a saw that nobody is selling?

I'm just posting this as a caution to look carefully at used saws.

I've been made leery of used scroll saws by a professional scroll sawyer who had a DeWalt 788 and a shop full of oak fretwork. He told me he uses his saw about 8 hrs a day, almost everyday. When things start to "loosen up" or it "gets noisy", he puts it up for sale and then buys a new one. He said he can usually get within a $100 to $150 of the new saw price. At the time, I was thinking of buying a used one. I decided a new one might be a smarter deal for me, because I didn't know enough about scroll saws to be able to tell the good from the bad.

I'm sure there are good saws out there for sale. This is only one story, and again, only mentioned as a caution.

Kevin & BOB,
I think you both have valid points..There are good deals and some not so good deals.
I don't think you will find too many ex21 up for sale right now. Those that have me love em.

Yea that is sort of my point..why buy a used saw and save $100 when you have no idea how much its been used and get no warranty..I can't believe these things sell like hot cakes like that too..I'd give $200-250 for one but $400 dang..a lot of times you can get a new one on sale for $450 or so...

Kevin,
When your looking at higher end saws such as Hegner and Hawk, one thing to know is Dewalt was not making scroll saws back in the late 70s and early 80s. When I look on Craigslist or Ebay at saws there are alot of old old saws for sale. But some times you can find a great deal on a higher end saw. The main thing to look for in a Hawk is to look for an Ultra model saw, because it has a DC motor. I see alot of Hawks for sale with AC motors, that means the saw was built before 1994. My thoughts on a Dewalt is it's a good mid range saw for the money. I have three Hawks and one Dewalt. Too Dusty is correct a Dewalt has 16 pivot points, that means 16 bearings that could go bad. That's the reason his friend sells his Dewalt and gets a new one after a few hours. Hegner and a Hawk have only 6 pivots. Dewalt is a good saw, just look at a used one with your eyes wide open. Even the higher end scroll saws will need new parts and repairs through it's life time. I have found some great scroll saw deals on this site jaxe.com
