Default Another saw for Pops shop!

Just picked this one up this week. Another addition to my collection of treadle scroll saws. Circa 1887 from Trump Bros. in Delaware. It shouldn't take as much 'restoring' or cleaning up as the last 3 did. It doesn't look like I'll need to re-nickel the blade holders and bolts on this one so far.

Here's 2 of the originals I completed.

saw pair - small.jpg

The one on the left is a late 1800's New Rogers Saw. At times it was given the top student of a graduating class who excelled in woodshop.

The one on the right is a late 1800's Millers Falls 387. It was heavier, had a quick change blade holder on the top and also had a bellows style blower attachment that 'blew' away the saw dust and chips.

My third saw is currently on 'Ethel' because I had it on display at the last car show of the season.

I would love to find one of those to take to craft shows with me. I am so tired of people walking by and saying that stuff is made with a laser. If they stop in I explain in detail how the projects are done one at a time with a scroll saw and show them some blades that I use. They usually have a new found respect for our trade after an explanation. Steve

They're really not all that expensive Marshall. The least expensive one I bought was $125.. the most expensive was the last one at $290 (+S&H) When it comes to the scroll saw / lathe units...they can get quite pricey. When I first started collecting these, I dropped out of an auction where a combo went for $237 because I thought that was too high. I could kick myself in the butt now for not sticking it out. The last combo I saw at auction went for $540 and wasn't near as complete as the first one I saw. DUH... I started looking into replating of the nickel blade holders after I bought the second one and am fairly good at it now. I do the bolt/screw heads, blade holders and whatever else should be nickel before I'm satisfied with the completion. I had done a thread on here a while back showing the before and after of the re-nickeling process on the MF-387 saw. Watch OUT...It becomes addicting!

Good luck with the restoration. The saws you've already restored look great.

Saw came today already! Better than expected too. Won't have to do more than just a little cleaning and some oiling! Seller even included the US Patent Office letter from the Trump Bros. explaining and detailing all the improvements they had made to the saw design. He also sent along some copies from a book on "American Foot Powered and Hand Powered Machinery" that show the Trump Bros. different scroll saws. The one I got is called a "Dexter" saw. It came in 3 different configurations. No table to be mounted on an area of your choice, The table version I have with a 13" throat, and a larger version with a 16-3/4" throat. Cost.... with a half dozen blades, wrench and drill bits = $9.50. Patented 1877. It's now the oldest scrollsaw I have so far.

That is so Cool! I really love to see these old saws being preserved. Great job on the restorations!

Couple guys in our scrollsaw club have velocipedes and they always attract a lot of interest when we bring them to shows.
