I broke the upper arm of my Delta 40-540 scroll saw and was looking to by a replacement arm and saw that there is a Type 1 and Type 2. Does anyone know how to tell which type I have?\ I'm also wondering if this is something that can be fixed. I broke the arm at the very end where the blade mounts. I think it happened when I was trying to tighten the blade. I remember something giving way but couldn't figure out what it was. I continued to use the saw with some minor issues, and when I was changing a blade, I noticed it. Any help is appreciated. This saw has frustrated me a lot, so I'm wondering if this is a good reason to get a new one. Thanks Todd |

| 'Senior' member - no way! | Hi Todd - i have the 40-570 model. I'm not sure how this differs to your saw but looking at mine if the tip broke I think it would be possible to machine a piece to slip on to the end of the arm as a prosthetic Can you photograph your damage from top, side and front on and post the images to give an idea of just what the damage is and maybe I or someone else can help you Cheers

Todd, I checked at eReplacementParts.com : Power Tool Parts and Tool Repair they have upper arms for both the type 1 and type 2. The type 1 is part number 1373642 for $22.53 and the type 2 is part number 900209 for $29.18. There should be a type number somewhere on the saw but I have no idea where. Do you have the manual for it? Maybe it tells on there. They are located in Utah and have very fast service. I just purchased a part for my sander from them. Their toll free number is 866-802-6383. Maybe they can tell you which type saw yours is. Good luck with it.

Here are a couple of pictures of the broken arm. I did look at the ereplacementparts.com site and ended up ordering it from them. Hopefully this will work.

| 'Senior' member - no way! | That arm looks different to mine Todd - but as you've followed Mike's link I hope you've solved your problem. Good luck!

Todd, you must have found out which type your saw was, 1 or 2. I am curious, how in the heck did you break that piece off?

I looked in the parts manual and found the number and it matches the number for the type 1 saw, so that's what I ordered. I actually didn't know that it was broken until about a week after it broke. I flipped the lever to apply the tension to my blade once and something gave way. I looked all over the saw and couldn't figure out what happened. The blade still tightened down, just not as much as before. I then noticed it later that it was broken. I had used it since then and it still worked. This saw has always given me problems with getting the blade in there just right. It seems the 2 arms are too far apart for a normal blade. After I install a new blade and tighten it down, I turn on the saw and let it run for a few seconds and the blade will slip out of the top clamp sometimes. I also can't seem to get enough tension on the blade either. It always seems too loose. I can move it left and right more than 1/8th of an inch after it's been tightened. I kind of fixed that by buying a longer bolt that does the tensioning. I did this after the saw broke though, so I don't think that caused it, it just made me notice it. |
